Prepare Your Smile for Implants With a Grafting Procedure

Dr. William E. Hay will only suggest a bone grafting procedure if necessary. It’s typically performed for patients who have significant bone loss in their jaw. While commonly performed for implant procedures, it may also be necessary for other restorative treatments. Dr. Hay will discuss what to expect and give you plenty of time to ask questions.

Here is what you can expect:

  • Dr. Hay will do a thorough exam of your mouth. We may also need to take digital X-rays and 3-D scans of your mouth. This allows us to determine the extent of your bone loss and if you’ll benefit from this procedure.
  • If bone grafting is right for you, he will place the bone material in your jaw. We will numb your mouth first, so you don’t feel a thing. Dr. Hay minimizes the sting of local anesthesia by using a special technique. We also have an anesthesiologist who can come into our office to administer deep sedation, if desired.
  • Your mouth will need time to heal after the bone is in place. Once enough time has passed, you’ll return to our office for your implant treatment.
  • Dr. Hay will place the implants in your jaw using a computer-guided procedure. You’ll return one more time for your customized new teeth.

Common Questions About Bone Grafts
What is a bone graft?

A bone graft builds up a thin or weak jawbone. It can fill space left after an extraction, or we can use it to boost the strength of a jawbone battling an infection brought on by gum disease. Your dentist will simply place material along your bone that will encourage new bone growth. While the procedure itself is quick, it will take several months for your bone to respond and heal.

Are bone grafts necessary?

One of the most common reasons for bone grafts is to strengthen a jaw so that it can successfully support implants. The more time that has passed since you’ve lost teeth, the more likely you may need a graft to receive implants. Without tooth roots to provide stimulation, the bone in your jaw begins to shrink – as much as 25 percent in the first year after tooth loss.

Are bone grafts safe?

When done by a highly skilled dental professional such as your dentist, bone grafts are safe. Dental practitioners have training in this treatment and will do the proper examination before recommending it. It is not a complex procedure and is performed routinely at our practice. We can discuss any possible negative effects with you during the preparation stages.
