Most patients with obstructive sleep apnea or all with obstructive sleep apnea grind their teeth and snore. Just because you grind your teeth and snore doesn’t mean you have obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by a jaw position by having too retruded mandible, a long soft palate, large uvula, large tongue for mouth size, and large tonsils. All work and go over your airway, especially when lying down.
And we evaluate and look and use sleep studies to tell. And we use a removable appliance and move your jaw forward and your tongue will follow your jaw. It also protects your teeth from grinding and clenching, which can be more severe than you would do when you were awake. Air treatment is one way. There are surgical ways of removing tissue, and, of course, the CPAP, BiPAP are all treatments.
Airway is a little less invasive. Sometimes we work along with people that have had the surgery or that have a CPAP or BiPAP to protect their teeth and then we’ll do a sleep study where they’re just using their appliance.
The appliances we use have a long life. So it’s not like you’re gonna have to buy one every couple of years or anything. We have them and have been out there for several years. You need to do an exam with whoever’s treating you at least once a year for sleep to make sure everything’s working properly, and have an exam with whatever you’re using, whether it’s with us, with your sleep appliance, and if you’re here for a cleaning, you would just bring it. If you just saw me for that, you would come in once a year for an exam and a check for us to see how everything’s doing so that we’re healthy and safe.

Say Goodbye to Your CPAP With This Comfortable Alternative
Sleep apnea is a serious condition that causes the airway in your throat to close during the night, briefly cutting off your breathing. It can cause you to snore or wake up gasping for air, leading to frequent interruptions to your sleep. When you visit our practice, Dr. Hay can fit you for a custom oral appliance that will stop this from happening.
During your consultation, Dr. Hay will arrange a sleep test. This will confirm if your sleep troubles are related to apnea. Once this diagnosis has happened, we can set up a virtual visit with a sleep specialist. We’ll also take digital scans of your teeth that are used to create a custom oral appliance. Unlike a CPAP machine, this device is:
- Comfortable to Wear – Your sleep appliance will fit you perfectly. After just a few nights, you’ll barely feel like you’re wearing it. This is far better than a CPAP that can be awkward to wear while you sleep.
- Simple to Maintain – You can easily clean your sleep appliance with a soft toothbrush and gentle soap. It’s that simple! You can also take it with you while you travel by simply packing it in your suitcase with other oral hygiene supplies.
- Easier to Incorporate Into Your Lifestyle – Because of the ease of its use, you are more likely to continue wearing this appliance each night. As a result, you can expect more long-term relief.

Sleep apnea is a condition caused when your airway becomes obstructed while you sleep. This usually occurs when your tongue or other soft tissue in your mouth temporarily relaxes. This causes frequent interruptions in your breathing that make it nearly impossible for you – and often your household – to get a good night’s rest.
Sleep apnea is a serious condition because it interrupts critical airflow while sleeping. It can leave you feeling lethargic during the day and interfere with your work productivity and your personal life. In addition, sleep apnea has been linked to serious health conditions like high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and depression.
Yes, you are quite likely to feel fatigued if you suffer from sleep apnea. This sleep disorder prevents you from reaching the stages of deep sleep, including REM sleep. Without deep sleep, you will experience the effects of sleep deprivation. That can leave you feeling tired and dealing with daytime sleepiness.
