By treating their malocclusion. And sometimes we work along with physical therapists or chiropractors by restoring their bite, however it is, with golden proportion and getting them out where their muscles… A lot of TMJ problems that weren’t from an accident, like getting hit in the jaw, which can also start patients that have a bite that sets them up for jaw joint problems. It can be started just by the muscles not being happy and grinding, and sometimes when they’re younger they haven’t started that yet but are probably going to, but they can just get hit in the chin, just bump it and then it can start the domino effect.
But just the way we do our full mouth reconstruction, it’s the same. We get you to golden proportion as best we can. We generally put the TMJ in an anterior position, especially if your disc and ligaments are really stretched. We may put you out there a little further than where we’re going and hold you and let that all heal and then move you back or we set you to position in the beginning and we set your height, your nose to chin height, and your bite. We analyze the bite to where it’s perfect as we can get on that particular patient and we work on that by coming in for appointments. We have so many appointments in our series, and then some require more. And we work along with other, you know, to have a good posture and a good…everything refers up as well. Most TMJ problems that aren’t an accident are caused by bite problems, bite issues that haven’t been corrected.

Find Much-Needed Relief From Your TMJ Disorder
If you have a TMJ disorder, you may experience a variety of symptoms. You may notice popping sounds when you chew, frequent headaches, sensitive teeth due to grinding or clenching, and pain in your jaw, neck, or head. If you notice any of these signs, you’ll want to come in for an appointment.
Dr. William E. Hay will examine your jaw and determine what type of treatment you need. He has special training from LVI Global that allows him to determine if your issues are caused by TMJ trouble or something else. He may recommend:
- Custom Oral Appliance – He will provide you a custom oral appliance that will act like a cushion between your teeth. It will lessen pressure on your jaw, so it can heal. This can relieve the symptoms of your disorder, especially with nightly usage. It also protects your teeth from the effects of grinding or clenching. Without an appliance, grinding can cause damage that may require restorative treatment.
- TENS Treatment – This neuromuscular treatment sends electrical signals to your jaw to loosen the area. Dr. Hay is trained in this area, so you can feel confident you’ll receive the best possible results. It’s often combined with a custom oral appliance.
- Orthodontics – Sometimes correcting bite alignment is the best way to give you relief from a TMJ disorder. We offer Six Month Smiles and clear aligner options to straighten your teeth. Dr. Hay will do an exam to determine which type of orthodontic treatment is right for you.

TMJ treatment has helped many patients once again enjoy everyday activities like talking, eating, and laughing without pain. The key to successful TMJ therapy is finding a treatment method that works best for you. We offer several different ways to treat TMJ pain, including a custom mouthguard, orthodontics, or TENS treatment. We’ll determine which one will work best for you.
It’s possible, yes. Inflammation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can lead to pain in the surrounding muscles of the head and neck, which can be misinterpreted as migraines. By wearing a mouthguard, you can alleviate the pain caused by TMJ inflammation and potentially experience relief from headaches.
Signs of a TMJ disorder may include jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds when chewing, difficulty opening the mouth completely, facial pain, headaches, and ear pain or ringing. Some people may also experience neck and shoulder pain or toothaches unrelated to dental problems. Also, your jaw may feel locked or stuck. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to visit our practice for help.
